Artifacts Museum - Flint : Woodland

The Woodland period ( as it exists in Missouri ) is generally excepted to be between 3,000 B.P. - 1,300 B.P. There was a heavier focus on pottery, which as tempered with crushed gravel or grog. The vessels were decorated by incising, stamping, and cord marking. Human and animal figurines also first appeared made of pottery at this point. The platform smoking pipes of the Hopewell culture emerged as well. This was a period of massive change as farming increased and villages had more time to be artistic and created pottery and stone works of art.
